How does the Virginia practitioner issue my Written Certification?

Through the CCA Portal. Since December 1, 2025, all new and renewed Written Certifications are created in the CCA Portal rather than on paper. After the 15-minute audio-visual video visit, Dr. Miller issues the certification there, you receive a 'Written Certification for Medical Cannabis Issued' email, and you download a digital card from your portal account.

Is there a Virginia state card or registration fee after the visit?

No card is required and no fee is required. Since HB 933 of 2022, patients do not have to register with the state; you present the digital certification card (or a printout) with a government-issued ID at any licensed Virginia dispensary, which scans the QR code to verify it. Registering with the CCA remains optional.

How long is a Virginia Written Certification valid?

The practitioner sets the duration, up to one year, and may add usage recommendations. A renewal is a new video visit and a new certification in the CCA Portal; book 30 to 60 days before the expiration shown on your digital card so dispensary access does not lapse.
